Free health insurance program for Magnet PrEP Care clients
In partnership with American Exchange, San Francisco AIDS Foundation will now pay the health insurance premiums for people in our PrEP program who meet eligibility criteria and sign up for Covered California health insurance during the enrollment period.
What is the new service?
In partnership with American Exchange, San Francisco AIDS Foundation will now pay the health insurance premiums for people in our PrEP program who meet eligibility criteria and sign up for Covered California health insurance during the enrollment period. That means that qualifying clients will receive subsidized health insurance coverage.
What do eligible clients receive?
- Free Covered California health insurance enrollment and advisory services through American Exchange
- Information and guidance in order to pick a Covered California plan that will best fit their healthcare needs
- Paid monthly health insurance premiums (up to $225 per month)
Who is eligible?
PrEP clients are eligible if they are:
- Currently uninsured
- Are part of (and remain in) Magnet’s PrEP program
- Meet income qualifications (138% to 350% of the Federal Poverty Level)
- Fill PrEP prescriptions at a participating Walgreens pharmacy
What does 138%–350% of the Federal Poverty Level mean?
For a single person household, the annual income range is from $20,783 to $52,710. Clients who are between 138%-200% of the Federal Poverty Level will be eligible for the lowest premiums and highest level of benefits.

*Clients enrolled in this program must fill their PrEP medications from a participating Walgreens pharmacy.
When is the enrollment period?
The enrollment period for Covered California is November 1—January 31.
What Covered California plans can be chosen?
Clients can select the Covered California plan that best suits their needs and covers PrEP medications at participating 340B pharmacies. (Kaiser Permanente plans are not available through this program.)
What happens if a client decides to stop taking PrEP?
Clients who decide to stop taking PrEP, attending their quarterly PrEP visits (and do not call to reschedule), following through with their quarterly testing requirements, or complying with any other requirements set-forth and agreed to in the Program Requirements will be removed from the PrEP Insurance Program after 30 days.
