San Francisco AIDS Foundation’s clinic at Strut has operated for many years as a free clinic–relying on a mix of individual donations, government funding, and corporate partners to fund operations. As we continue to experience declining public health and government funding and support for these types of programs, we are taking an important and necessary step to preserve the services and clinic our community relies on.
Knowing that the majority of clients using our clinic are insured, we are transitioning from a free clinic model to a clinic that bills insurance for services. We anticipate that the vast majority of our clients will pay $0 or very little out-of-pocket to access our services, and SFAF will bring in new funding from insurance companies that will enable us to sustain our programs and services.
What this means for you:
- At an upcoming visit, our administrative staff will ask for your insurance information so that we may bill your insurance company for services received. This may come with a co-pay or co-insurance. Preventative care services such HIV/STI testing and PrEP access are generally not subject to a co-pay.
- You may choose not to use your insurance at your clinic visit. In this case, a sliding fee scale or self-pay rate will apply for the visit and service costs.
- If you don’t have insurance, we’ll see if you qualify for free services, or apply the sliding fee scale or self-pay rate for your visit.
