Xicanx Drag Queen’s Guide to Survival

April 28   5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

 Recurring Event (See all)

One event on April 28, 2020 at 5:00 pm

Join QTPOC at Strut every Tuesday evening. In these unprecedented times, it is important for us to look to our ancestors for wisdom and lessons in resiliency and survival. QTBIPOC often find themselves on the frontlines of major world crisis and they represent a long line of people who have had to be creative and innovative with how they and their loved ones survive. Join Dino Foxx/Foxxy Blue Orchid for a series of virtual sharing circles where they/she will share some lessons learned growing up poor, brown and fabulous.

4/14: Journaling and Creative Writing – As a brooding queer teen buried deep in books and scribbling thoughts into countless journals, creative writing was always a way to express my fears, hopes, and desires and helped me work through major ancestral trauma. Through a series of simple creative writing prompts, I will share some ways that I worked to get the scary thoughts out of my head and onto the page before bed each night. Many of these writings never left the page, some of them eventually made their way into my books published by Kórima Press, and some darker stories I am forever grateful are no longer stuck in my heart begging to be free. Bring your journal and something to write with. No previous writing experience needed.

4/21: Mindfulness and Meditation – One lesson this global pandemic has taught me is an understanding that we are all in this together as a community. My mindfulness practice has brought many gifts into my life. In this virtual sharing circle, I will share some thoughts on patience and how guided meditation can help keep focus through the noise on social media, in daily interactions and in our own minds. I will also share how mindfulness has helped me find ways I can show up for those in my life with kindness, understanding, and calm…and how not to judge myself when I can’t. Attendees will receive a download link for a few sleep time meditations to use on nights when it is a little harder to fall asleep.

4/28: Barrio Gourmet Cooking Demo – Growing up the child of a single Mexican mother, I grew up watching magic happen in the kitchen making do with what ingredients were in the pantry and eating delicious, creative meals that I still make today. In this digital cooking demonstration, join Foxxy Blue Orchid in the kitchen to learn some tips on making a few quick and easy dishes for one or more using inexpensive ingredients to help on the days when Bay Area rent has you strapped for cash. Foxxy Blue will also share some cooking tips and knife tips that help take your cooking to the next level. Attendees will receive one quick and easy breakfast, mid-day snack and dinner recipe.
