Operated by the Earth Abides Catholic Worker Farm, Catherine House is a retreat center in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Calaveras County (16777 Armstrong Road, Calaveras County, CA 95246). It got its start in 1991 when a Franciscan priest brought up people with AIDS to enjoy the country air. From that, they decided to turn their main house into a respite/retreat space for people with AIDS or other illnesses, and those involved in their care. The 1,975-square-foot, handicapped-accessible house sits on 80 acres of wilderness/farm and now hosts monthly HIV/AIDS-related retreats open to all, regardless of their spirituality. You can read more about them at this link:
The Bridgemen are extremely honored and thrilled for the opportunity to spend 3 nights and 2+ days at Catherine House! Below is our itinerary:
Thursday, September 19: A Catherine House van will pick us up at 1 PM at the Safeway at 2020 Market St (at Church St) in San Francisco and drive to Catherine House, arriving by 5 PM, in time for dinner.
Friday, September 20: We will do two 3-hour shifts of hearty labor on the premises to help beautify the space, which has been ravaged by recent storms, the pine bark beetle scourge, and lack of sufficient staff to keep up with the horticulture. A meal will be served between the work shifts.
Saturday, September 21: We will be free to explore the bioregion between Earth Abides’ 80-acre Land Trust and the Stanislaus National Forest.
Sunday, September 22: the Catherine House van will return us back to Safeway in San Francisco right after breakfast.
Catherine House staffers will provide dinner on Thursday, three hot meals on Friday and Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday. The meals will accommodate various types of diets (e.g., vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free). Re sleeping arrangements, we will be split into two groups: there are 9 beds in Catherine House and 3 more in nearby Peace House. Be prepared to share your room.
