LGBT Asylum Drop-In
September 14 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
The LGBT Asylum Project provides asylum-related services to LGBTQ people and people living with HIV in our community.
Join us at Strut from 1 pm – 3 pm, we will hold an information session so you can learn more about the asylum process and find out how to start the process of applying for asylum.
What is LGBTQ asylum? It is illegal to be LGBTQ in 80 counties around the world, and many LGBTQ people can face discrimination, hate crimes and more in their home countries. People who are now in the U.S. can apply for asylum based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, and social group (which can include being a member of the LGBTQ community or being HIV-positive). Applicants need to show evidence of past persecution or fear of future persecution. Applicants must apply to asylum within a year of coming to the U.S. or returning to the U.S. Asylum status is granted indefinitely, and an asylee can stay in the U.S. indefinitely or apply for a green card after one year.
Accessibility: There are no stairs to enter the lobby level at Strut from the street level. The building has three floors, and there is a stairwell with handrails and a wheelchair accessible elevator. There are 48 steps from the lobby to the 3rd floor where this event will be held. Please refrain from wearing scented products so that people with chemical sensitivities can join us. On that note, so folks with severe allergies to dogs can join us, please leave your pet at home unless it is a certified service animal.
