About the Artist
Serge Gay Jr. is a Grammy nominated Creative Director and Art Director. Also a Painter, Illustrator, Graphic Designer, currently based out of San Francisco, California. His art infuses inspiration from living in cities from coast to coast. Influence in his work can be found from the culture sociology of his homeland of Haiti, New York, Miami, Detroit and San Francisco. Serge has taken residence in San Francisco where he continues to explore and share his talent with the world through career oriented and non-profit freelance projects.
My art is very figurative, representing forms that are recognizably derived from life. I love the human forms and the physical structure of a person’s bodily shape, but most of all are head studies of the face that intercept and hold on to me and a great way to study everything to form and color. Especially the face as it expresses emotion of one’s circumstances, mood or relationship with others or to a condition or an environment. My work talks about social facts in all cultures of a society affect the behavior or attitudes of an individual member of that society. However, I also talk about how we behave within a group as a whole as members in that society, and in the world. Style is something I never position in my head, because it is so confining and restricted to the fact that things can go in or out of style. People say that I may have a style, but I am always finding ways to reinvent myself the way I think, and I am still learning and will continue to learn. A painter is who I am. I started painting at the young age of twelve, when experimenting with paint in my sketchbook was carried on extensively. Painting in layers keeps me opened and interested. My work shows layers and strokes to predict what a person, place, or thing should look like from the creator’s mind to reality. I frequently use acrylic paint because it’s a very fast drying medium that allows me to keep my stroke marks as I’m working.
