Hepatitis C Prevention
- Do not share injection drug equipment, needles, cocaine straws,
or crack pipes; if possible, obtain sterile injection supplies from
a needle exchange program.
- Make sure sterile tools are used for tattooing, piercing, and acupuncture.
- Do not share personal items such as razors, toothbrushes, or nail
files that may break the skin or mucous membranes.
- Exercise universal precautions in health-care settings, including
use of gloves and face protection; sterilize all instruments or use
disposable equipment; if possible, use sheathed safety needles.
- Carefully clean up any spilled blood or body fluids and disinfect
the contaminated area with a bleach solution.
- Cover any open cuts or wounds.
- Practice safer sex, including use of latex or polyurethane condoms
for vaginal and anal intercourse, especially with multiple partners.
