Selected Highlights from the 5th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic InfectionsHarvey S. Bartnof, MD The 5th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) was held February 1-5 in Chicago. Approximately 3,400 participants attended the conference. Eight hundred thirty-seven abstracts were presented. CROI focuses on the clinical and basic science aspects of HIV. A major theme for the conference was the newer anti-HIV therapies efavirenz (Sustiva), abacavir (Ziagen), amprenavir and, to a lesser degree, adefovir dipivoxil (Preveon). A secondary theme was new and updated information about various combination anti-HIV therapies, including double protease inhibitor regimens, hydroxyurea, and 4-drug, 5-drug and even 6-drug combinations. Abstracts related to women and HIV appear later in this issue. Plenary sessions and abstracts will be available on the Internet at www.retroconference.org until February 1999. Sponsors of the conference are the Foundation for Retrovirology and Human Health, in collaboration with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
