American Dietetic Association's
Additional Food List for Indinavir

Certain foods can interfere with medication being absorbed, and if a medication isn’t fully absorbed, it can’t get into the bloodstream and go to work. For this reason, do not take indinavir (Crixivan) at the same time as meals that are high in calories, fat and protein. It’s important to take indinavir correctly.

  • indinavir can be taken with a low-fat, low-protein, low-calorie snack or light meal, for example, dry toast with jelly and juice or coffee, or cornflakes with skim (nonfat) milk and sugar. These types of meals don’t significantly interfere with absorption.

  • if possible, indinavir should be taken without food—either 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal—with water, skim (nonfat) milk, juice, coffee or tea.

  • at any other time of the day that is not part of your schedule for taking indinavir you can eat anything you want.

The following is a list of foods that are similar in calories, carbohydrates, protein and fat to the light meal examples in the prescribing information for indinavir. It is essential that the serving sizes indicated in this list be strictly followed. Individuals using this list need to use standard measuring cups and spoons. In some cases, the foods in this list may not satisfy the requirements of a full meal. Larger meals may be needed in between doses of indinavir to satisfy daily nutritional needs.

This list is designed to be used only as a guide. The specific meals in the list have not been tested. Factors other than the nutrient guidelines listed above may affect absorption of indinavir. Consult your doctor before making any changes or modification to your diet when taking indinavir.
