HIV/STD Health Educator/Hotline

The California AIDS Hotline provides information, referrals & peer counseling about HIV/AIDS and STDs. Hotline volunteers respond to calls covering a variety of HIV-related issues & concerns in English or Spanish, as well as assist with special phone projects. Volunteers complete 32 hours of a combination of classroom training tutorials, and practice calls before taking calls on their own. Volunteers are asked to commit to one 4-hour shift per week. We are looking for volunteers with daytime availability Monday - Friday.

Exchange Provider

The HIV Prevention Project at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation is looking for energetic volunteers who have a few hours per week to assist us in our needle exchange sites. The HIV Prevention Project exchanges 2.3 million sterile syringes per year. HPP is one of the largest syringe exchange programs in the United States.

We are looking for people who have flexible schedules during the daytime and evenings.

Daytime Clerical Help

Volunteers are needed weekday mornings (and some afternoons) to assist with bulk mailings, photocopying, phone banking & other clerical & administrative tasks.

Development

Our Development Department is looking for Data Entry volunteers as well as general clerical volunteers any day of the week for four hours each day.

Internships

 

HIV/STD Health Educator Internship

Department: Volunteer-Based Programs/California AIDS and STD Hotline Cano
Supervisor: Sergio Cano
Number of hours: Ten to twenty hours per week, some evening and weekend work
Time Commitment: Initial training 32 hours and a 9am-1pm or 1-5pm shift M-F. Minimum 3 month commitment (or 100 equivalency to be determined by Supervisor)

Responsibilities:

  • Provide peer counseling about HIV by helping callers define their relationship to the disease.
  • Help the caller to make their own informed decisions about behaviors which may or may not expose them to the virus.
  • Make appropriate referrals to social services agencies when necessary.
  • Provide test site and test options in relation to HIV.
  • Provide accurate and up to date information about the quickly changing approaches to treatment.

Qualifications:

  • Eighteen years or older (or special arrangements must be made)
  • Availability during business hours 9-5, Monday thru Friday for one of the 4 hour shifts either 9-1 or 1-5.
  • Sensitivity to HIV-related needs and concerns
  • Respect for confidentiality of HIV status
  • Background in HIV information and or commitment to learn
  • Familiarity with computer keyboarding is preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, especially the ability to work with culturally diverse staff and volunteers including gays, lesbians, people of various ethnicities, and people with HIV

Skills gained from internship: Communication Skills, Decision-Making, and Peer Counseling skills are cultivated in a supervised environment. The education provided will allow the trainees to serve as HIV/STD educators. Hotline skill serve to enhance resumes.

Event Planning Intern/Volunteer - Volunteer Based Programs

Department: Volunteer--Based Programs

Responsibilities:
  1. Assist Volunteer Resources in recruiting, orienting and coordinating volunteers for special events (spring internship -- primarily for AIDS/LifeCycle and AIDS Walk San Francisco; summer internship -- primarily AIDS Walk San Francisco; fall internship -- primarily the Women and Family Holiday Party).
  2. Assist in planning and executing HIV/AIDS education and awareness outreach components for those events.
  3. If time allows, assist event managers for events on logistics, participant support and other duties as needed.
  4. Minimum 3 month commitment.
Qualifications:
  1. Excellent organizational and communication skills
  2. Creativity and problem-solving skills
  3. Previous event planning/logistics experience preferred
  4. Sensitivity to HIV-related needs and concerns

Skills gained from internship: Interns receive real-world events experience from the planning to on-site logistics. We will go through the entire process from contracts to guest experience. The events will greatly enhance the resume of the intern and give them to confidence to know that they can run fantastic events.

Magnet volunteer opportunities

Magnet (http://www.magnetsf.org), a gay men’s community health center in the Castro District of San Francisco, provides gay and bisexual men with sexual health services, and hosts community building activities and events. Volunteers are utilized in all service areas at Magnet.

Sexual Health Services for Gay and Bisexual Men

Testing/treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, and confidential rapid HIV antibody testing is offered Tuesday-Saturday during afternoons and evenings. Volunteers speak candidly and non-judgmentally with individuals about sexuality, drug use, and other factors affecting HIV/STD transmission; disclose/discuss sensitive test results; provide referrals; and are able to complete required documentation. 
 
HIV Test Counselors must be State certified Rapid HIV Test Counselors, or be able to attend 40 hour training, followed by a two day advanced training within six months of completing the first.  HIV Test Counselors are asked to commit to a minimum of two 4 hour shifts per month for at least six months.

Licensed clinical volunteers (RN, NP, PA, MD/DO), under the supervision of Magnet’s clinical supervisor and medical director, conduct screenings and treatment for syphilis, Chlamydia, and gonorrhea, and provide vaccinations.  They are asked to commit to a 4-7 hour weekly shift for at least six months. 

Customer Reception/Registration

Volunteers assist staff in registering customers, providing referrals, and coordinating the delivery of sexual health services in an active environment. They should be well organized, enjoy interactions with the public, possess proficiency with computers, and be able to address customer concerns in a candid, non-judgmental manner. Training is provided on site and volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of two 4 hour shifts per month.

General Office/Clerical
 
Volunteers are needed during operating hours for assistance with mailings, copying, filing, and other administrative help.

Community Building Activities and Events

Magnet conducts and hosts community building activities and events. Community events such as open mics and town hall forums are held in the evenings throughout each month, and community building projects are conducted on a regular and ongoing basis. Volunteers assist at individual events, and on projects with the Community Organizer.

Client Services provides client advocacy and various services to HIV positive people everyday. If you have personal hygiene materials such as soap, shampoo, razors, conditioner, toothbrushes, and toothpaste for our clients please bring them to the AIDS Foundation to either 995 Market Street 2nd Floor or Client Services 1 Sixth Street; San Francisco, CA 94103. Seismic Challenge’s Seismic Training Experience

This event replicates the look and feel of an actual day on the Seismic Challenge Biking event (see www.seismicchallenge.org for more details) The staff and volunteer team will set up bike parking, snacks, check-in, safety, etc. The riders arrive early and then we send them on their way. They ride out on a 80 mile ride and then instead of moving down the state from Fort Bragg to San Francisco, they loop back to us in Crissy Fields or "camp". 6-8:30AM (2), 12:30-3:30 (3) and 3-6:30pm (3)! AIDS/LifeCycle Thank You Party

A BBQ on the San Francisco Bay is a wonderful way to bring all the wonderful AIDS/LifeCycle riders and volunteers together for fun in the sun. Folsom Street Fair, the original leather fair has become an internationally known event and we expect that once again this year will bring all the leather, pvc and skin that we have come to expect!!! Seismic Challenge
Saturday & Sunday October 18-19th, 2008
Fort Bragg to San Francisco through Mendocino and Russian River Valley

The Seismic Challenge is a two-day, 200-mile cycling fundraiser for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation which will be held on October 18th and 19th, 2008.  The ride follows the San Andreas Fault from Fort Bragg in Mendocino County, through the Russian River Valley and across the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco. Registration is open via the Seismic Challenge website, www.seismicchallenge.org. The ride will be supported by a volunteer Crew who will be doing things such as pouring water, making Gatorade, picking up trash, parking bicycles, fixing bicycles, picking up exhausted riders, wrapping sore knees, leading cheers, giving directions, hanging signs, marking the route, etc. If you are interested in being a member of this invaluable crew of fun-loving, compassionate people, we would love to have you.

All Crew members will receive a Seismic Challenge jacket and will be provided with meals and accommodations while working the event. Crew members are not required to fundraise but Crew members that reach the $1,000 fundraising level will also receive an official Seismic Challenge cap. Can’t volunteer for the whole ride?

Volunteers work with us in San Francisco (mostly) before the Seismic Challenge on all our pre-events the Kick-Off Party, some training rides, etc.  You could also be at the shuttle stop on Friday, Oct. 17, to send the riders off on their adventure or at the finish line expo on Sunday, Oct. 19, to welcome them back…. or both. Volunteers will all receive a Seismic Challenge Volunteer t-shirt. You can sign up online to be notified about volunteering for the Seismic Challenge and San Francisco AIDS Foundation events.

The Kick-Off party represents the first party of the year for AIDS/LifeCycle* and historically it has been a blast! The Kick-Off Party gathers registered riders, their guests as well as people who have expressed interest in the ride. It is hoped that anyone who hasn't registered yet will decide to ride based on all the fun they have at the party with all of us! We expect at least 600 participants and we would love to have you there to help support their efforts! AIDS/LifeCycle Registration Packet Assembly

Volunteers will be helping to assemble approximately 3,500 check-in packets for Orientation Day. Tasks include labeling envelopes, stuffing with numerically ordered bike frame numbers, helmet stickers and wristbands, inserting additional wristbands and coupons based on pre-set criteria, and sorting completed envelopes alphabetically by last name. This project requires meticulous attention to detail!

We are prep the Cow Palace for Orientation Day when the AIDS/LifeCycle riders from far and wide will all come together for the first time! Orientation Day

This is the day that all of the registered Riders and Roadies come from all over the world to participate in AIDS/LifeCycle. They will Check-In, turn in any additional monies/their medical forms, they will receive the last of their safety information, they will get their tent assignments, the rider's bikes will be parked for the ride out the next day and the roadies will gain their last training. Volunteers will make sure that all of this goes off without a hitch and the later shift will prep the areas for Opening Ceremonies! 8 am -- 1:30 pm, 12:30 -- 6pm and/or 4-7pm. Opening Ceremonies

Opening Ceremonies are the grand send-off of the riders and Roadies and represent the first day of AIDS/LifeCycle's 7 day ride down to Los Angeles. The riders are warmed up, stretched out and then the ceremonies begin with speakers representing the beneficiaries and the sponsors of the ride. The end of the ceremonies is the sending out of the riders on their grand 585 mile journey to end the AIDS pandemic! Duties will include Arena Crowd Control, Bike Parking, Gear, Late Registration, Security, Traffic Control, Volunteer Check-In, Water, and Breakfast Staff. 4-8:30 am (another early one but REALLY fun and extremely inspiring!) AIDS/LifeCycle

AIDS/LifeCycle is a bicycle ride which begins in San Francisco and ends in Los Angeles over 580 miles. This extraordinary ride has been raising money and awareness for over 10 years. It is the only AIDS fundraising bicycle event in California organized by the non-profit agencies it benefits but we can only do this with your help. Our volunteer Roadies are on the Event to do everything that needs to be done. This includes, but is definitely not limited to setting up and breaking down campsites and rest stops, serving meals, pouring water, making Gatorade, picking up trash, parking bicycles, fixing bicycles, picking up exhausted riders, wrapping sore knees, giving massages, leading cheers, giving directions, hanging signs, marking the route, and just about anything else you can think of. AIDS/LifeCycle Bike Retrieval

We will be getting all the bikes that are returning via truck from the ride to LA ready to be picked up by their tired and sore riders! We will be moving the bikes around so volunteers should be able to lift 20 pounds.

AIDS Walk San Francisco

Join SFAF Team and walk in California's most popular, with over 35,000 walkers(!), AIDS fundraiser. The ten kilometer (6.2 miles) AIDS Walk begins and ends in Sharon Meadow in Golden Gate Park. You can join Team SFAF and raise urgently needed funds and to send the message that the AIDS crisis is not over - change the course of the epidemic. Dore Alley Up Your Alley

The Up Your Alley Fair is organized by the same people as the Folsom Street Fair is held in San Francisco's South of Market district. Expect to see lots of leather, (other) skin and interesting fetishes. The Fair will take over Dore Alley between Folsom and Howard Streets and the adjoining block of Folsom Street between 9th and 10th Streets.
