World AIDS Day Events 2018


San Francisco AIDS Foundation and local community partners are commemorating this World AIDS Day with a number of events that honor those we have lost to HIV/AIDS and celebrate the progress we are making in getting to zero new HIV infections, zero AIDS-related deaths, and zero HIV stigma. World AIDS Day is on Saturday, December 1, and events are taking place throughout the week.

Monday, November 26

State of Emergency: Violence Against Trans Women Forum, 6:30 pm, The Commonwealth Club of California, 110 The Embarcadero, Max Thelen Boardroom, San Francisco. Trans women of color leaders from across the U.S. will participate in an interactive forum to discuss the genocide of trans women of color and how to expand intentional allyship. Wednesday, November 28

amfAR HIV Cure Summit, 1 pm – 5:30 pm, Robertson Auditorium, UCSF, 1675 Owens Street, San Francisco. Get an update on HIV cure research from UCSF researchers and hear from community advocates working on behalf of people living with HIV. RSVP and find more information

Thursday, November 29

GTZ Consortium Meeting, 5:30 – 8 pm, 25 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco. The Getting to Zero consortium will provide an update on San Francisco’s progress in getting to zero new HIV infections, zero AIDS-related deaths and zero stigma. Register and find more information

QTPOC at Strut, 5 pm – 8 pm, 470 Castro Street, San Francisco. The Elizabeth Taylor 50-Plus Network and GAPA will host a storytelling and remembrance ceremony with a special appearance by the GAPA Gay Men’s Chorus. QTPOC health events held from 5 pm – 6 pm, the storytelling and rememberance event begins at 6 pm. Find more information

Friday, November 30

Candlelight Vigil, 5 pm – 6 pm,1035 Market Street, San Francisco. Participate in a Candlelight Vigil to commemorate World AIDS Day with San Francisco AIDS Foundation as we walk from 1035 Market Street to City Hall. Candles will be provided. Find more info

Light in the Grove, November 30, 6 pm – 9:30 pm,National AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. Experience a moving candlelight reflection, followed by a banquet with cocktails, food and musical performances. Find more info

Saturday, December 1

AIDS/LifeCycle Ride and Remembrance Gathering, 8:30 am, starting from Bowling Green Drive and Nancy Pelosi Drive, San Francisco. Join Positive Pedalers and AIDS/LifeCycle for a 19-mile ride through San Francisco and ending at The Grove. RSVP and get more info

Inscribe, morning hours, sidewalks in the Castro. Inscribe is a yearly World AIDS Day event held in the Castro to honor people we have lost to AIDS. Inscribe their names on the sidewalks of Castro Street between Market and 19th Streets in brightly colored rainbow chalk (provided).

World AIDS Day breakfast and Leaves of Love art installation, 10 am, 470 Castro Street, San Francisco. Join the Elizabeth Taylor 50-Plus Network, Positive Force and Bridgemen for a community breakfast and a special World AIDS Day memorial event. Participate in the “Leaves of Love” art installation designed by local artist Oscar Gallegus Zamora, where you will have the opportunity to write and dedicate “leaves” for placement on the art installation. Find more info

National AIDS Memorial Grove Events, noon – 1:30 pm, Bowling Green and Nancy Pelosi Drive, San Francisco. National AIDS Memorial Grove will host a light lunch and observance including scholarship awards, hero awards, musical performances, oral history and a reading of names. Find more info

El Grupo dedication, 1:30 pm, National AIDS Memorial Grove, San Francisco. El Grupo of San Francisco AIDS Foundation will honor the Latinx communities around the world affected by HIV and AIDS. During a dedication ceremony, a commemorative boulder will be presented to honor the 35 years that El Grupo has served the community, the founder of El Grupo will speak, and a proclamation from the City to El Grupo will be presented.

World AIDS Day at Grace Cathedral, 9 am – 7:30 pm, 1100 California Street, San Francisco. Grace Cathedral hosts an entire day of activities to honor those lost to HIV and AIDS, including a morning prayer in the AIDS Chapel, reading of names from Book of Remembrance, Eucharist to commemorate World AIDS Day, Candlelight Labyrinth Walk, and World AIDS Day Stories and Song. Know your status, 3 pm – 7 pm, The Eagle, 398 12th Street, San Francisco. The San Francisco AIDS Foundation mobile testing team will be available just outside The Eagle offering free HIV and STI testing. Find more info

Revival Dance Party, 6 pm – 10 pm,St. John the Evangelist Church, 1661 15th Street, San Francisco. Join us to honor and share our losses during a candle lighting ritual, as we share a meal with one another, and celebrate life with dance.

Sunday, December 9

World AIDS Day Open Mic & film screening, 1 pm – 4 pm, Oakland LGBTQ Community Center, 3207 Lakeshore Ave., Oakland. Celebrate World AIDS Day with open mic entertainment, snacks and refreshments and a screening of the film “Rent.” Find more info
