 | Congress authorizes the Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) Act. |
 | The red ribbon is introduced as a symbol of AIDS awareness by Visual AIDS and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. |
 | A national debate on HIV-infected health care workers follows reports that patients in Florida may have been infected by their dentist. |
 | Bristol-Myers receives FDA approval to market ddI to those who cannot tolerate AZT or who no longer derive benefit from it. |
 | The Education Department launches a number of provocative campaigns: "Crack . . . Sex . . . AIDS" bus cards aim a safe sex message at African American women who use crack, while "Reinforce Your Love" bus shelter posters urge gay and bisexual youth to use condoms. An ad in Image magazine of the San Francisco Examiner reminds the general public that "Sex Is Good" and encourages responsible safe sex behavior and antibody testing. |
 | The Public Policy Department creates a state legislative affairs program with funding from the Irvine Foundation. Through this program, the S.F. AIDS Foundation organizes an ambitious AIDS Lobby Day in Sacramento. Public Policy staff also help to draft legislation which would allow San Francisco and other California communities to implement needle exchange as part of a comprehensive HIV prevention effort. |
