The first diagnosis of Kaposi's Sarcoma occurs on April 9, 1981 in San Francisco.
In July The New York Times reports the appearance of a rare cancer, Kaposi's sarcoma, among 41 gay men in New York and California. The lead paragraph in the 1981 San Francisco Chronicle story: "A mysterious outbreak of a sometimes fatal pneumonia among gay men has occurred in San Francisco and in several other major cities..."
On June 5th, in volume 30, number 21 of its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the Centers for Disease Control reports an unusual outbreak of Pneumocystis carini pneumonia (PCP) among young gay men. We now recognize this as the first reported cases of AIDS in the United States.
