BBE Offers Multiple Levels Of Involvement -- What's Right For You?
Black Brothers Esteem's
comprehensive approach to achieve individual and community health uses multiple
levels of intervention and offers multiple participatory roles for everyone.
Individual:
BBE staff is available for counseling and support for any issue that members
may struggle with. Members can also be introduced to mental, spiritual and
physical health care services, as well as HIV, STD and hepatitis testing.
Group: The
Phoenix Rising
group, located at the SFAF offices, provides a space for brothers to drop in to
talk with other men of African descent about relationships, substance use, HIV
care and prevention. Additionally, ongoing events such as movies, concerts and
church services offer another way for brothers to build supportive
relationships.
Community:
Leadership workshops focusing on public speaking skills, black men's health,
and communication skills, as well as weekend retreats have allowed members a
chance to develop their strengths and escape the day-to-day chaos of their
neighborhoods. Volunteer projects also connect BBE members directly with the
community. These projects include the SFAF Women and Family Holiday Party, MLK
March and Rally, SF LGBT Pride Celebration, and the 6th Street Fair. (See Calendar
for dates and details)
