California has the second highest HIV/AIDS incidence rate in the United States after New York.
An estimated 160,000 people were living with HIV in the state of California at the end of 2006, including all of those with and without AIDS and those who do not know they are infected.
 
In 2006, 1.1% of HIV Counseling and Testing Program clients were diagnosed with HIV.
 
In comparison to non-Hispanic Whites, Blacks were 1.7 times more likely to test HIV-positive and Hispanics 1.4 times more likely.
 
Men who have sex with men are most affected by HIV, accounting for 64.8% of HIV infections, followed by IDU (9.3%), heterosexual contact (9.4%), and MSM & IDU (8.1%).
 
Over two-thirds of all of those in California living with HIV reside in Los Angeles County or the San Francisco Bay Area. However, there has been a 2.7-fold increase in the number of people living with HIV in the San Joaquin Valley over the last decade.
 
0.7% of inmates in California prisons were known to be HIV positive in 2005.
 
11.9% of all people living with HIV/AIDS in California are women.
