HIVision Forum on April 29 – “Is HIV Treatment HIV Prevention?"

What: The San Francisco AIDS Foundation presents “Is HIV Treatment HIV Prevention?” -- a HIVision Forum.

Recent studies suggest that antiretroviral medications can play a role in curbing the spread of HIV. They also raise questions: Are HIV-positive people who take antiretroviral drugs less likely to transmit the virus? Can these same drugs taken by HIV-negative people help keep them negative? And, if so, what are the ethical, financial and health issues surrounding these HIV prevention strategies? Join us for a conversation on the science and controversies around using antiviral treatment to prevent HIV transmission.

When: Wednesday, April 29, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. A reception will follow.

Where: The Women’s Building, 3543 18th Street (between Guerrero and Valencia Streets), San Francisco.

Who: A panel of experts in scientific research, clinical care and public health policy will be led by Judith Auerbach, Ph.D., vice president for Science and Public Policy at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. The panelists will include Dr. Carol Brosgart, who serves as vice president for Public Health and Policy at Gilead Sciences; Dr. Moupali Das-Douglas, director of research and assistant clinical professor of AIDS/Infectious Diseases at the San Francisco Department of Public Health and the University of California at San Francisco; Dr. Robert Grant, endowed investigator at the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology and associate professor at UCSF; and Dana Van Gorder, executive director of Project Inform.

Contact: Debra Holtz, media relations manager at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, (415) 487-3071.
