04.29.09 - Celebrate Cinco de Mayo by Calling the California HIV/AIDS Hotline
Racial and ethnic minorities, including Latinos, are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS in the United States. An estimated 29 percent of Californians living with HIV/AIDS is Latino. Because Latinos tend to test later than others for HIV, their condition is more likely to progress to AIDS within one year of testing positive than blacks or whites. The San Francisco AIDS Foundation is working to change that.
To mark Cinco de Mayo, traditionally a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, the Foundation’s California HIV/AIDS Hotline will hold a special phone bank on May 5 offering free and confidential information in Spanish. Trained counselors will provide referrals for free or low-cost testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.
The holiday of Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely defeat of the much better-equipped French army in 1862, the last time that an army from another continent invaded the Americas. That is not unlike the battle we face against HIV/AIDS. On the occasion of Cinco de Mayo, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation encourages Latinos to learn their HIV status. As a first step, call our California HIV/AIDS Hotline at (800) 367-2437 on May 5 or any other day, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (until 9 p.m. on Tuesdays). The San Francisco AIDS Foundation, which began in 1982 as a volunteer-operated information hotline shortly after the AIDS epidemic hit the city, has been managing the Hotline for the state of California for the past 25 years and is the largest of its kind in the United States. The Hotline answers tens of thousands of calls and e-mails each year about HIV/AIDS and other STD risks, testing, prevention, treatment, care and funding.

Celebra el Cinco de Mayo y Tu Salud Llamando a la Línea de Información sobre el SIDA
Las minorías étnicas y raciales en los Estados Unidos, incluyendo a los Latinos, están afectadas de manera desproporcionada por el VIH. Un estimado 29 por ciento de residentes de California que viven con el VIH son Latinos. Porque los Latinos tienden a hacerse la prueba del VIH mas tarde que otros grupos, es mas probable que su condición avance a SIDA en un año o menos. La Fundación del SIDA de San Francisco está trabajando para remediar eso.
Para conmemorar el Cinco de Mayo, fecha en que tradicionalmente se celebra la herencia y el orgullo Mexicano y Latino, la Línea de Información sobre el SIDA, que es parte de la Fundación, va a tener un Banco Telefónico de Información y Referencia sobre el VIH, este servicio será en español, gratuito y confidencial. Consejeros capacitados ofrecerán referencias para tomar pruebas de VIH y otras enfermedades de transmisión sexual (ETS) las cuales se ofrecen gratis o a bajo costo.
El Cinco de Mayo conmemora la sorprendente victoria del ejército mexicano contra el ejército francés, mucho mejor equipado, la última vez que una fuerza de otro continente invadió a las Américas. Es similar a la batalla a la que hoy nos enfrentamos con el VIH/SIDA. La Fundación del SIDA de San Francisco quiere motivar a los Latinos, en la ocasión del Cinco de Mayo, a que conozcan su estatus del VIH. Como primer paso, llama al la Línea de Información sobre el SIDA de California al 1-800-367-2437, el 5 de Mayo o cualquier otro día, Lunes a Viernes de 9 a.m. a 5 p.m. (hasta las 9 p.m. los Martes). La Fundación del SIDA de San Francisco fue inaugurada en 1982 como una línea de información manejada por voluntarios, poco después de que la epidemia comenzó en la ciudad, y ha dirigido la Línea de Información del estado de California, que es la más grande de su tipo en los Estados Unidos, por 25 años.
