SFAF
supports new efforts to address the disproportionate impact of HIV on African
American men who have sex with men
In
the past year, there has been a great deal of media and public policy attention
paid to the disproportionate share of HIV infections among African American gay
and other men who have sex with men (MSM).
In
response, the public policy staff has played a key leadership role in creating
the National Black Gay Men's Advocacy Coalition, a new national advocacy
organization focused on this population.
Efforts to urge the federal government to develop an effective response
to this crisis will be also be a major part of SFAF's federal policy portfolio
in the year ahead.
Key
HIV prevention and care messages to be delivered through new social marketing
campaigns
There
is clearly a need for effective social marketing in 2006: 25% of those with HIV
do not know their status because they have not had a test or have not returned
for the results. Of those who have
tested positive, it is estimated that 20% are not accessing care. SFAF will be designing campaigns on a range
of key client-identified topics.
